In attempting to find within the image of a hero, a sense of the divine, I have only made a bungled and strange painting. Yet somehow I have learnt more by failing in this adventure than I would have by simply making a realistic image from a photograph. And ultimately, I like the painting better for having failed, for having refused to cooperate with the task. This is why I love art practice. It never fails to surprise, confound, disarm, discombobulate and dissemble.
